# Broad Market Slips as Commodities Surge; Most Sectors Red
The major U.S. stock indices edged lower Monday, with the Nasdaq Composite and Russell 2000 each falling 0.76%, while the S&P 500 dropped 0.28%. The Dow Jones managed a tiny gain of 0.26%, suggesting a mixed picture beneath the headlines—and the real story today was a sharp rotation into raw materials and away from tech and construction.
Packaged foods stocks put on a spectacular show, rallying 112.8% as a group. That's a remarkable single-day move driven by names like Mondelez International, Archer-Daniels-Midland, and Kraft Heinz. Precious metals followed suit with a 35.6% gain across seven holdings, including Newmont and Royal Gold, while coal miners jumped 27.6% and broader metal mining climbed 22.8%. This kind of commodity-led strength often signals investor caution about near-term growth—or at least a reallocation toward inflation hedges and defensive sectors.
The flip side was brutal for several corners of the market. IES Holdings (IESC) cratered 52.7%, while REGENXBIO (RGNX) fell 24.9% and biotech peer Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI) dropped 13.8%. Engineering & Construction stocks as a group sank 17.3%, with Quanta Services, Comfort Systems, and EMCOR Group all weighing on the sector. Blank-check companies and retail health services also stumbled, down 17.3% and 12.7% respectively. These losses hint at some sector rotation out of growth and into safety.
Among single-stock movers, Sadot Group (SDOT) soared 75.7%—an eye-catching jump that warrants scrutiny if you hold or follow the name. More modest but still significant gains came from Avax One Technology (+13.7%), Forward Industries (+11.5%), and a handful of entertainment and crypto-linked names. On the loss side, Deep Fission (FISN) dropped 13.6% and Azenta (AZTA) fell 12.1%, joining the broader tech and biotech selloff.
Several firms filed their annual reports over the past few days. Parker-Hannifin (PH), Wolfspeed (WOLF), Prospect Capital (PSEC), Scansource (SCSC), Bill Holdings (BILL), and Sanfilippo (JBSS) all landed 10-Ks recently. Of those, Scansource stands out with a Health Score of 69.2—a respectable mark—while Wolfspeed's 35.2 and Bill's 44.6 suggest more caution is warranted before digging into those filings. Also worth noting: five firms carry going-concern audit flags (Entrada Therapeutics, FS KKR Capital, Bain Capital Specialty Finance, New Mountain Finance, and International Seaways), a red alert that their auditors have substantial doubt about their ability to stay in business.
For Money Checkup subscribers running screens or backtests, today's tape reinforces the value of a quality filter. The broad market's weakness and sharp commodity rotation remind us why pairing strong fundamentals with valuation discipline matters—especially when single-day moves of 50%+ or 20%+ losses can wipe out unprepared portfolios.
