# Broad Market Ekes Out Flat Day as Biotech Tools and Energy Rally

The major indices finished nearly unchanged Thursday, with the S&P 500 down just 0.02% and the Nasdaq Composite up 0.01%, suggesting investors were treading water ahead of the weekend. The Dow slipped 0.31%, while the Russell 2000 small-cap index fell 0.11%—a pattern typical of cautious, directionless trading when no major economic data or events drive conviction in either direction.

Beneath that sleepy headline, however, individual stocks swung wildly. Surrozen, Inc. (SRZN) delivered the day's most eye-catching move, surging 108.4%, while AVAX ONE TECHNOLOGY LTD. (AVX) jumped 32.9% and Montauk Renewables (MNTK) gained 26.6%. On the flip side, Getty Images Holdings (GETY) tanked 26.4%, and Jaguar Health (JAGX) fell 20.8%—reminders that broad index stability can mask fierce cross-currents in individual names.

Sector performance revealed a few clear winners. Laboratory Analytical Instruments within Biotechnology—a group of 11 companies including Agilent Technologies, Waters, and Mettler Toledo—averaged a 10.8% gain, suggesting strong appetite for tools and equipment used in drug discovery and biotech research. Integrated Oil Companies also showed strength, up 10.1% as a group, with names like Chevron and ConocoPhillips posting solid gains. Consumer Specialties, led by names such as Signet Jewelers and Vestis, averaged 11.1% higher.

The weakness was equally pronounced in pockets. Tobacco plunged 29.9% (one company, Turning Point Brands), while Blank Checks fell 23.8%, Rental/Leasing Companies dropped 16.6%, and Coal Mining retreated 16.0%. Multi-Sector Companies also struggled, down 16.2% on average. These moves hint at shifting capital flows away from cyclical, capital-intensive, or commodity-linked sectors and toward more targeted, high-growth areas like biotech instrumentation.

On the regulatory front, six companies filed annual reports (10-Ks) this week. AIRWA Inc. (YYAI) filed most recently with a Health Score of 79.1, placing it in relatively stronger financial footing than peers like Benitec Biopharma (BNTC, Health Score 26.7) or American Battery Technology (ABAT, 22.9). Meanwhile, five companies are currently flagged with going-concern notes—Entrada Therapeutics, FS KKR Capital, Bain Capital Specialty Finance, New Mountain Finance, and Innovative Industrial Properties—signaling substantial auditor doubt about their ability to continue operations. Investors holding any of these names should review their 10-K filings carefully.

The flatline in major indices masked a market that remains selective about winners and losers. While energy and biotech tools garnered support and consumer discretionary showed modest strength, tobacco, blank-check SPACs, and rental companies faced headwinds. Money Checkup's Health Score and sector filters can help surface which newly filing companies land on solid operational ground versus those carrying going-concern risk.
