Nasdaq Leads Broad Weekly Gains as Biotech and Semiconductor Stocks Drive Volatility
2026-10-03 · Money Checkup market briefing
The standout story this week was the sheer size of individual stock swings compared to the calm overall market: while the major indices posted modest, steady gains, Kodiak Sciences (KOD) surged 192% and Corteva (CTVA) plunged 84.8% — moves that dwarf anything happening at the index level.
All four major benchmarks closed the week higher. The Nasdaq Composite led with a 1.19% gain to 27,190.86, followed by the S&P 500 (+0.73% to 7,722.72), the Russell 2000 (+0.94% to 2,832.89), and the Dow Jones (+0.49% to 51,176.96). The fact that small-caps (Russell 2000) outpaced the Dow suggests at least some risk appetite returned to the market this week, even as gains across the board stayed in the sub-1.2% range.
Beneath that calm surface, individual names told a much wilder story. Kodiak Sciences (KOD) more than tripled, up 192%, while Alpha Modus Holdings (AMOD, +111.5%) and Nautilus Biotechnology (NAUT, +103.5%) also more than doubled. Pacific Biosciences (PACB, +56.8%), Iovance Biotherapeutics (IOVA, +29.2%), and Wolfspeed (WOLF, +28.0%) rounded out a gainers list dominated by biotech and specialty tech names. On the losing side, Corteva (CTVA) dropped a striking 84.8%, and a cluster of biotech and pharma names — Liquidia (LQDA, -58.1%), Jaguar Health (JAGX, -52.5%), Karyopharm Therapeutics (KPTI, -50.5%), Foghorn Therapeutics (FHTX, -42.3%), and uniQure (QURE, -38.6%) — all posted double-digit percentage losses. Biotech clearly cuts both ways this week, showing up heavily on both the gainer and loser lists.
At the industry level, the rotation favored specialty tech and lab-instrument names. Electronics Distribution topped the list at +30.2% (though that's based on just one company, GameStop), while Biotechnology: Laboratory Analytical Instruments gained 25.2% across 11 companies including Agilent Technologies, Waters, and Mettler Toledo. Consumer Specialties (+24.4%), Multi-Sector Companies (+19.3%), and Electronic Components (+18.3%, spanning 13 companies including Sandisk, Seagate, and Western Digital) also had strong weeks. On the downside, commodity-linked and defensive sectors struggled: Tobacco fell 27.6%, Coal Mining dropped 23.4% across five companies, Aluminum fell 21.2%, Blank Checks lost 18.3%, and Agricultural Chemicals — a group that includes CF Industries, Mosaic, and Scotts Miracle-Gro — declined 18.0%.
On the filings front, six companies filed annual reports this week. Health Scores among them varied widely: Copart (CPRT) posted a 67.0 Health Score, Vail Resorts (MTN) came in at 56.2, and Cracker Barrel (CBRL) at 52.5, while Uranium Energy Corp (UEC), Nova Minerals (NVA), and NioCorp Developments (NB) all filed with much weaker scores of 28.8, 25.5, and 8.9, respectively. Separately, five companies remain flagged with going-concern audit notes, meaning auditors have expressed substantial doubt about their ability to continue operating: Entrada Therapeutics (TRDA), FS KKR Capital Corp (FSK), Bain Capital Specialty Finance (BCSF), New Mountain Finance Corp (NMFC), and Innovative Industrial Properties (IIPR).
For investors trying to make sense of a week with such a wide gap between calm index moves and chaotic individual stock action, Money Checkup's Health Score and screener tools can help put names like this week's biggest movers — and this week's going-concern flags — into a fuller fundamental context before drawing any conclusions.
