# Biotech Gains, Semiconductors Slide as Markets Edge Higher

The major indices posted modest gains today, with the Nasdaq Composite leading at +0.82%, while the S&P 500 and Dow Jones added 0.70% and 0.28% respectively. But beneath those steady headlines lies a sharp tale of two markets: a biotechnology renaissance in analytical instruments pushed alongside oil strength, while semiconductors and mining metals took a beating.

The standout mover was Surgery Partners (SGRY), which surged 47.6%—a jaw-dropping one-day jump that dwarfed everything else on the board. Rapid7 (RPD) and Range Resources (RRC) also posted strong double-digit gains at +20.3% and +17.7%, but even those gains pale next to SGRY's performance. On the flip side, biotech name Oric Pharmaceuticals (ORIC) cratered 32.0%, while ArriVent BioPharma (AVBP) and Perspective Therapeutics (CATX) each fell roughly a quarter of their value. These swings suggest company-specific news rather than sector-wide moves—worth checking those press releases before trading.

Sector rotation favored industrial and energy names today. Laboratory analytical instruments—a subset of biotechnology—led all industries with an 18.5% average gain across 11 companies including Agilent Technologies, Waters, and Mettler Toledo. Books (+16.3%), miscellaneous manufacturing (+15.9%), and garments/clothing (+13.7%) also outperformed. Most notably, integrated oil companies rallied 13.6% on average, with names like Chevron and ConocoPhillips participating in the energy strength.

The damage concentrated in metals and mining. Precious metals fell 21.0% across seven companies (Newmont, Royal Gold, Coeur Mining), while metal mining slid 21.1% on weakness in diversified names like Freeport-McMoran and Cleveland-Cliffs. Most painful: other metals/minerals dropped 42.1%, though that category contains just one company. Semiconductors, far larger with 61 companies, declined 17.0% as a group—hitting heavyweights like Nvidia, Broadcom, and Micron Technology. The semiconductor weakness may reflect profit-taking or concern about valuation after a strong recent run.

On the filing front, several companies recently submitted their FY2026 10-Ks. Commercial Metals (CMC) posted a healthy Health Score of 72.3, while Acuity (AYI), MSC Industrial (MSM), Winnebago (WGO), and FactSet (FDS) all filed in the 60–61 range. Notably, Micron Technology filed on October 9th but carries a concerning Health Score of just 31.6—worth investigating if you hold the name. Meanwhile, five companies remain flagged with going-concern audit notes from their auditors, signaling substantial doubt about their ability to continue operations: Entrada Therapeutics, FS KKR Capital, Bain Capital Specialty Finance, New Mountain Finance, and Innovative Industrial Properties. These are red flags that warrant serious scrutiny before any investment.

For Money Checkup subscribers running our screener, today's data underscores the value of checking both Health Scores and audit flags—especially when a stock's one-day move seems outsized. Strong fundamentals (high Health Score) paired with recent 10-K filings give a clearer picture than price action alone.
