# Market Pulls Back Sharply as Semiconductors, Tech Tumble; Pockets of Strength Emerge in Services
The broad market retreated today with the S&P 500 sliding 1.82% and the Nasdaq Composite down 2.86%—a notably steeper decline for tech-heavy names. The Russell 2000 fell 1.66% and the Dow Jones dropped 1.09%, suggesting weakness rippled across market-cap ranges, though large-cap tech bore the brunt of selling pressure.
The damage was concentrated in semiconductor and electronics manufacturing. The semiconductor sector, which counts 61 companies, declined 18.5% on an equal-weight basis, with heavyweight names like Intel down 28.6%, Nvidia, Broadcom, and Micron all taking sharp losses. Electronic components fell 18.3% across 13 holdings, and electrical products tumbled 15.1% among 27 companies. This represents a meaningful rotation away from hardware and chip exposure—a sector that had been a market darling for much of the year.
The losses weren't universal, though. Some of today's biggest gainers suggest a flight to niche strength: Grid Dynamics Holdings jumped 40.8%, FMC Corp surged 30.5%, and Asure Software gained 30.2%. Diversified commercial services—a broad bucket of 17 companies including names like United Rentals and PayPal—climbed 15.5% on an equal-weight basis. Garments and clothing added 17.3% across five holdings, and medical electronics rose 19.7%. These pockets hint at selective demand for software, logistics, apparel, and healthcare equipment, even as the tech infrastructure underlying those sectors weakened sharply.
On the downside, real estate and healthcare stocks took heavy hits. Apollo Commercial Real Estate Finance plummeted 63.9%, likely a reaction to broader commercial real estate stress signals in the market. Alphatec Holdings fell 38.1%, and several biotech and specialty pharma names—Gyre Therapeutics, CorMedix, and Karyopharm—each shed 24–29%. This mix of weakness in commercial real estate debt, orthopedic devices, and small-cap therapeutics suggests sector-specific headwinds rather than a single macro trigger.
A handful of companies filed fiscal 2026 annual reports this week. Commercial Metals (CMC) stood out with a Health Score of 72.1, the strongest among recent filers, while Factset Research Systems (FDS), Acuity Brands (AYI), and MSC Industrial Direct (MSM) all posted scores in the 59–61 range. Winnebago Industries and Jabil Inc filed as well, with Health Scores of 59.7 and 54.8 respectively. Investors focused on value and quality should review these 10-Ks for signs of operational durability—particularly those scoring above 60—as fundamental data becomes fresher. Five companies remain flagged with going-concern doubts from auditors (Entrada Therapeutics, FS KKR Capital, Bain Capital Specialty Finance, New Mountain Finance, and Innovative Industrial Properties), a warning sign worth monitoring for potential delisting or restructuring risk.
Today's selloff is a reminder that broad index declines can mask meaningful rotation. While tech infrastructure suffered, defensive and niche growth areas found buyers. For Money Checkup readers using our Health Score and sector screens, this pullback may surface undervalued opportunities among quality names that sold off in the wider rout—worth reviewing before the market's next move.
