Sector vs. industry — how this site classifies companies

Two levels of the same classification this site uses, from broad to specific.

Sector — the broad category

A sector is a broad grouping like Technology, Health Care, or Financial — this site uses roughly a dozen of these, sourced from Nasdaq's own exchange-wide classification data (the same categorization Nasdaq itself publishes for listed companies).

Industry — the specific business

Industry is a finer-grained label within a sector — e.g., within Health Care, "Biotechnology: Pharmaceutical Preparations" is a specific industry. Two companies in the same sector can be in completely different industries with nothing in common day to day.

Where this shows up

The Sector Rotation and Hot Themes views on this site both group companies by this classification and track how each group's average return moves over recent windows — sector at the coarse level, industry at the finer one.

What it isn't

This is a structural, exchange-provided classification, not a market narrative or trending theme (like "AI stocks" or "reopening plays") — this site doesn't currently track informal, narrative-driven groupings, only this fixed sector/industry taxonomy.
