What is SEC EDGAR?

The free, official database this entire site is built on.

What it is

EDGAR (Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval) is the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's public system for company filings. Every 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, and proxy statement any U.S. public company files becomes available here, for free, usually within minutes of filing.

Why this site uses it directly

EDGAR has no daily request quota (only a courtesy rate limit) and requires no API key — just a request that identifies who's asking. That means every number here comes from the original, legally-required disclosure, not a paid data vendor's re-packaging of it.

What it can't do

EDGAR doesn't standardize how companies report every number — two companies can tag economically identical figures under slightly different XBRL labels, or restate a number in a later filing. This site's data pipeline handles the common cases (see the financials methodology), but it isn't infallible; the original filing is always the final source of truth.

How to check a filing yourself

Every stock page on this site links out to the actual filing behind its numbers. If a figure looks surprising, that's the fastest way to verify it — read the primary source, not just this site's summary of it.
